Aiban S. Mawkhroh is a distinguished architect with over three decades of experience dedicated to the architectural landscape of Northeast India. As the founder and Principal Architect of Atelier A+, he has spent his career blending contemporary design with the deep-rooted cultural heritage of Meghalaya.

Design Philosophy & Expertise

Aiban’s work is characterized by a profound respect for traditional forms and ecological sensitivity. His academic foundation at the Centre for Environmental Planning & Technology (CEPT), Ahmedabad, culminated in a specialized focus on the “Meaning in Khasi house-form,” exploring the evolution of traditional and bungalow-type housing in Sohra. This expertise in local heritage continues to inform his practice, where he advocates for “Green Lessons from Traditional Architecture”.

Key Achievements & Recognition
  • Award-Winning Design: Winner of the design competition for the ‘Iconic Structure’ at Barik Point, Shillong, and the ‘Textile Tourism Centre’ in Nongpoh.
  • Industry Leadership: Currently serves as the President of the Meghalaya Architects Forum and is a member of the Meghalaya State Heritage Authority.
  • Academic Contribution: Member of the Board of Studies for the Department of Architecture at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
  • Cultural Advocacy: A frequent speaker and paper presenter on Khasi traditional architecture and cultural heritage at institutions like INTACH and IGRM Bhopal.
Professional Background

Before establishing Atelier A+ in 1994, Aiban served as an Assistant Architect for the Meghalaya Govt Construction Corporation. His early career included a prestigious internship with Ar. Snehal Shah, contributing to the international design competition for the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts.

Deeply involved in the promotion of sustainable regional growth, he has held leadership roles in the Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum and the Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum.
