Ar. Shirish Beri
26th JK AYA Great Master’s Award Winner
Ar. Shirish Beri is a luminary in Indian architecture, whose work transcends the boundaries of mere construction to enter the realm of philosophy, poetry, and deep ecology. With a career spanning over five decades, Beri has consistently championed an architecture that is “free and spontaneous,” unburdened by transient styles or “isms.” He famously opted to unlearn and uncondition his mind by working in the mountains near Kolhapur rather than pursuing a master’s degree abroad, a decision that cemented his lifelong dedication to a grounded, nature-first architectural vocabulary.
His architectural approach is rooted in a deep concern for the modern human condition—specifically the increasing schism between man and nature, and the loss of meaningful interaction between fellow human beings. Beri’s designs serve as a “reflective pause” amidst the clutter of contemporary life, aiming to bring the user closer to their own self and the environment. He believes that the immeasurable dimension of space is as critical as its physical form, leading him to create structures that function not as exhibitionist icons, but as humane, socially relevant, and sustainable organisms that nurture the human spirit.
Throughout his prolific journey, he has delivered iconic projects that exemplify these values, such as the SDM College of Engineering in Dharwad, which reimagines educational spaces, and the Laboratory for Conservation of Endangered Species (LaCONES) in Hyderabad, which is masterfully carved into a site of natural boulders. His versatility extends from healthcare institutions like the D.Y. Patil Hospital to intimate eco-dwellings and rehabilitative spaces like the Muktangan Drug De-addiction Centre. Each project is a conversation with its site, often utilizing local materials and vernacular wisdom to minimize environmental impact while maximizing human joy.
The architectural fraternity has recognized his profound contributions with several of its highest honors. In 2017, he was named the recipient of the 26th JK AYA Great Master’s Award, joining an elite group of past masters like Laurie Baker, Charles Correa, and B.V. Doshi. He has also been conferred the Baburao Mhatre Gold Medal (2022) by the IIA and the ARCASIA Gold Medal for his residential designs. Beyond his practice, Beri remains a multidisciplinary artist and philosopher, sharing his “wanderings and ponderings” through books, paintings, and award-winning films like “The Unfolding White,” all while continuing to inspire the next generation to seek goodness over greatness.
