Project Description

Title of Project: URBANE SUSTAINABILITY

Name of Project: Residence Design for Self

Design Concept

Design aims to increase human comfort: efficient use of space, light, and ventilation. It must respond to climate.

Two green approaches:

Reduce energy post-construction.

Use natural materials for energy efficiency during construction. (This project follows the second.)

Sustainable Design Approaches

Use of Sustainable Materials:

Walls: Rammed earth, compressed earth blocks, minimal bricks

Vertical Elements: Stone, arches

Slabs: RCC filler slabs with earthen pots

Flooring: Jaisalmer stone

Furniture: Reused wood from demolition

 Climatic Design:

Radiation Reduction:

Mud slabs, green cover, cavity walls, spatial buffers

Overhangs and glare-free daylight openings

Natural Ventilation:

Central courtyard, customized openings

Cross ventilation with rooms open on three sides

Climatic Responsiveness

Interior surfaces are 14°C (horizontal) and 4°C (vertical) cooler than conventional designs.

Design shaped as a cube with a central courtyard for wind and daylight circulation.

Openings

Shielded from harsh sun by orientation and minimal use on southern facade.

 Thermal Protection

Cavity walls on east and west reduce heat.

Terrace gardens insulate horizontal surfaces.

 Natural Ventilation

Southwest fully open, allowing wind flow.

Courtyard acts as thermal outlet.

No artificial ventilation needed.

Materials of Construction

Local sourcing (within 50 km):

Rammed earth, compressed blocks, lime, mud, bamboo

Stones: Jaisalmer (for flooring), Limkheda (arches)

Filler slabs use earthen pots from Nadiad

 Material Reuse

Demolished materials reused:

Bricks, steel, wood frames, bamboo (as scaffolding + roof structure), mosaic tiles.

“House design has reflected, throughout its history, the different solutions advanced by each period to the continuing problem of securing a small controlled environment within a large scale setting – too often beset by adverse forces of cold, heat, wind, water and sun.”
— Victor Olgyay
